Places to go…things to see!

The new year is finally here and it is starting off with a bang! The winter storm has hit my little town with the most snow it has had since 1919. That’s pretty impressive for Oregon. The snow and ice make you begin to think about places with warm winds and nice sandy beaches. Of course there are those of you who enjoy the snow and high mountain tops. The thing that is constant is everyone typically has a place they want to travel to. Have you ever thought of traveling to an event? There are so many great things going on in the world that you might be interested in. For instance….

Palio di Siena

The Great Palio di Siena is a Horse race through the town square that began as far back as the 14th century. The history and culture around these races (twice a year July 2nd and August 16th) is rich and full. The competition is stiff and rivalries even stiffer.

Highland Games in Scotland

The Scottish Highland Games are held in many locations across Scotland and the world. The events range from Tug-of-War, Caber Toss, and the Scottish Hammer throw to more refined events such as playing the Bagpipes and Traditional Dancing. Whatever your pleasure is there is likely to be something you will enjoy.

Dashain

The 15 day Annual Dashain Festival is Nepals biggest celebration of the year. Celebrated by Nepalese people around the globe. The festival is a celebration of victory of good over evil. It is such a big event that government and most business’s close during the celebration.

Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival

This little gem of a festival is help each year in Niceville Florida. It is considered a seafood festival but there is a little of everything there for the entire family from arts and craft exhibits to Country Music Stars singing on the stage front and center. The food is definitely something you should not miss. They serve Mullet (A fish common in the waters around the gulf coast), Shrimp, Alligator, BBQ, and desserts a plenty. Not to mention this is a part of Florida most people don’t see because it is not the Tourist packed Orlando/Miami/Keys area.

Takayama Festivaltakayamamatsuri

This festival is held in spring and autumn in Takayama. The large floats that are paraded though the streets are incredibly beautiful and ornate. There are several parts to the festival so for the most part all day and into the evening there will be something to do and see.

SO you can see that you can find something in just about every corner of the world to celebrate an event. Destinations are fabulous but Events are entertaining, Educational and just plain fun for the most part. There is something to be said for traveling to a beach to relax but what about that trip to adventure and exploration. Don’t forget you have to live the Adventure to experience the thrill of life.

Take some time and look around for something unique and intriguing. Find a festival, race, game, tournament, parade, competition, concert, or just a great Karaoke bar and make plans to go. You might be surprised at how much fun you might have.

The End of the Year

Its the end of the year. 2016 is almost over and the new year is about to become a reality. Now is the time some people make resolutions for many different reasons and they spend time planning what is going to come in the next year. what is it you want to happen in the next year? Of course I am going to tell you to travel. Not because of my profession but because I love to hear what people do and what they find when they travel.

I keep a Pinterest page that has little nuggets of information about different areas of the world. It really is a good resource to begin your interest in traveling to a specific destination. I don’t recommend taking the information as completely accurate but it is a good start. Always take the effort to do your own research for information to verify what you find on the internet.

My Fiancee and I spend plenty of time planning our adventures. The next big adventure is of course our wedding. We are getting married on a Princess Cruise to Alaska. She always wanted to get married on a cruise and I wasn’t going to say no. Being a Travel Agent does not mean that I get stellar deals on travel. I have to save and plan just like everyone else. My big advantage is I work in this industry and therefore I have experience in finding those deals that match what I am looking for. When you are planning your Adventure take the time to research it to the point of ridiculousness. You will begin to see not only patterns but the little gems of deals that are out there.

For our honeymoon we are going to Walt Disney World and let me tell you I have a shelf devoted to Walt Disney World and Orlando Attraction Books. The shelf changes often as new attractions arrive and old attractions are retired. I read a good amount of blogs and web content that I find relevant to what I am looking for. Just for fun I am planning to do what is called Disney Bounding. Mostly ladies do it but a few guys do it as well. Its coming up with a themed outfit that represents a Disney Character or someone related to a Disney franchise.

Its amazing what crazy ideas you find when you spend as much time researching travel as I do. I think the worst part about being a travel agent is finding so many wonderful places to go that you know you just do not have enough time to visit all of them. That is why I love my clients to tell me about where they go on their adventures. It allows me to learn about the places they travel. One of the agents I work with specializes in trips to Mt. Everest and Base camp. Let me tell you that the stories I hear about those adventures are truly amazing.

So what is your Adventure? What was your Adventure? What is your Adventure Bucket List? Leave a comment below and maybe I will send you a Bonus that may help with finding your own Adventure. Adventure is never far away, even as close as your backyard!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

When you think about travel the first thing that pops in to most peoples minds is flying on an Airplane. The ease of flying anywhere in the world made it accessible to almost anyone who could afford the ticket to see the wonders this world has to offer.flying airplane airplanes parade

We have all taken a Road Trip at some point in time. The call of the open road. Buying Doritos and Mt. Dew at every gas station. Driving as long as you could just to get there in an impressive enough time to brag to everyone when you get home.

“I drove from Portland to Las Vegas in 14 1/2 Hours. Tsk Tsk Google maps says it takes 15 1/2 hours.”

Then there is the form of travel that has been around a few centuries now. The worlds first steam-powered passenger railroad was the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. Trains are the original form of mass transit. With the huge amount of weight that steam powered engines could pull it was just natural that the world embrace the new technology and get people from point A to point B.

Change is always a good thing but sometimes its important to return to the origin, the beginning of it all. I had the great fortune to do just that over the weekend. Let me explain…

I will make this quick so we can get to the good stuff.

I proposed to my girlfriend while in Edinburgh Castle. She accepted to my amazement. I was supposed to have a good amount of time before said marriage was to happen. Life happened instead and the wedding date suddenly was moved to the next coming summer. My lovely fiancee wants to get married on a ship so we are getting married on a ship (I know pretty cool right!). Now I have to try and figure out how to get everyone up there in a timely and cost effective manner. Thus comes my brilliant idea of taking the train!

Now time-warp to this past weekend….

We arrive at the Klamath Falls Oregon Amtrak Train Station (KFS) about an hour earlier then the train is due to arrive. We check a few bags and wait for the train to arrive. I have been on a couple of trains (www.skunktrain.com/) before but never a true passenger train such as this. The sound of the Horn in the distance kind of made my heart beat a little faster. My sleepiness dissolving away to leave an excited 43 year old man who feels almost 8 waiting for the train to come around the corner. Where is it? I can hear it squeaking and clunking along the tracks. There is the horn again and its close enough to feel it in your chest. Moments later the Lead engine comes around the corner. Its Blue, Red and Grey colors worn like a prideful flag. AMTRAK in big white letters across the front of the engine.

The train pulls into the station and executes a text book stop positioning all of the cars next to a pathway across the tracks. Honestly I am not sure if it was textbook or not but I was impressed. Boarding the train was simple enough except for the fact that we had a few extra bags with us. The stairs to the top were narrow and steep. I wouldn’t recommend them to someone who has bad knees. We had purchased regular Coach seats on the way up and Business class on the way back.

Our seats were at the front of the last car on the train. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to my seat because it a lot wider then an airplane seat(6 or more inches wider). The seat was comfortable and was able to recline an incredible amount. Plenty of other comforts are included as well. Power points to charge your phones or plug in your video player.

A conductor came through the car wearing his Conductor hat and I swear to you handlebar mustache. He checked our tickets and gave us a little info on the layout of the train. Two cars up is the observation car and 5 cars up is the dining car. The rest of the train forward is off limits without a proper ticket.

So the long trip north is about to begin. In an almost unnoticeable move forward the train begins to leave the station. Just like in the movies you see the terrain outside the window move by like a scrolling video game. We are heading to Auburn Washington for the annual Veterans day Parade. It was a good excuse to try out the train before committing an entire wedding party to a 10 hour train ride. We sit and enjoy the gentle rocking of the train and listen to the squeaks and squeals as we roll along. After 30 minutes the early morning rise is starting to take effect. I nod off for a quick power nap. 30 minutes later I awake fully refreshed and ready to explore the train.

What a pleasure it is to just get up and walk about the train without squeezing around people and waiting for the drink cart to pass you so you can use the bathroom like an airplane. I walked from car to car until I got to the observation car. What a cool car. the windows are large and the seats are comfortable. they have booth style tables and lounge style chairs facing the window to watch the scenery go by. What a great way to see the country. The seats in this area are first come first serve. Whenever I would walk through there I always noticed seats available.

Helpful tip of the day for train travel. If they call a meal time and you want to eat then be sure to not wait. They closed the breakfast service down before 9am. Seriously! 9am! well the snack car was just fine. I cannot emphasize enough that you realize the prices on the train for food and beverages is high. I recommend carrying a backpack with snacks and drinks. Stop at Subway on your way to the station.

Over the next several hours we watched a movie, played cards, had great conversations while watching the scenery go by, got destroyed at Farkle, and explored as much as we could. We stopped at several other stations. My phone had a signal for most of the trip up except for an hour or so in the middle of nowhere Oregon.

Once we arrived at the station in Tacoma I called an Uber Ride and we went to the hotel. the ride was great and the hotel was Meh, but that’s not what I am here to tell you about. So now back to the train!

Sunday morning we get up and head back to the train. Now this leg of the trip is in Business Class. The difference is….

In Business Class, you’ll enjoy a fully refundable ticket if canceled prior to departure, 25% point bonus for Amtrak Guest Rewards members, seating in a dedicated car, an invitation to the wine & cheese party in Pacific Parlour Car, free AmtrakConnect Wi-Fi, two bottles of water, a $6 onboard food coupon and access to the Metropolitan Lounge in Los Angeles and Portland.

First off the car was far less crowded and the seats seemed more comfortable. We sat down in our assigned seats and a conductor brought two bottles of water and our vouchers over. He explained the differences in Business class and then moved on down the car. It was already worth the extra $32.00 per person to go business class. The WiFi was a little slow but it worked. Whenever we had a question the car conductor was right there to answer it.

The trip back to Klamath Falls was 12 hours due to longer waits on the tracks for freight trains. I honestly didn’t notice. I really didn’t want it to end so soon. It was such a pleasurable ride that we decided it was well worth the extra day of travel to take the train then to drive or fly if we are on the west coast.

Soooooo I would say its safe to say that the train ride was a success. The wedding party can ride the train and have a great time while doing it. No stress about time or driving or running from airline gates and dealing with the TSA. Just show up and jump on. How brilliant is that. In my opinion Travel just became a lot more interesting with the inclusion of trains. I think that travel in all its forms has a great sense of adventure and excitement to it. Its even more exciting when you discover a new form of travel that you enjoy.

I am taking the train to Disneyland next time!

Get Up and Go!!!!

Not all travel is the same. I worked for a major airline in the 90’s that no longer exists. We got great travel benefits. We could fly anywhere in the us round trip for less than 50 bucks and if we wanted to fly First class it was less than 100 bucks. We would fly to seattle for a cup of coffee after work from Memphis and then be home before it was to late to go have a drink at the bar. I have clocked out and walked right up to the gate and boarded a flight to Denver for a steak dinner. It was completely crazy what we used to do.

Then I started working as a trainer for the airline and I had to fly to multiple airports to train the employees. The more knowledge I gained the more places I had to go and train. I started to fly all over the world and train Ground services from Japan to france. I have been to almost every state in the US (47) and most major airports in the world. You might think that I am so lucky to have seen so much of the world. Well I haven’t. What I have been able to see is the airports and the hotels at or near those airports.

Traveling for work is completely different then traveling for pleasure. You try to streamline things so that you can be as efficient as possible so that you may go home sooner. Sure there are the work trips that you want to take that extra day to explore the city you are in but that’s usually not the case. If you have that opportunity I always suggest you do it.

Don’t let the fact that you travel a lot for work stop you from traveling for pleasure. They are two completely different animals. One is a tiger that needs to be watched and trained and closely monitored whereas the other is a sweet fuzzy puppy that likes to jump around and have wonderful puppy breath and it licks you in the face. I know strange analogy but it works just go with it. If you travel to Fiji for work then go to Detroit and catch a Red Wings Hockey Game! If you travel to Detroit for work then go to Fiji for a week on the beach. If live in LA fly to Orlando and try out their amusement parks. Are you a history fan! Philadelphia, Boston, DC, Fredericksburg, and heck even Oregon!

The point is travel brings you to more than just a destination in the world but a destination in your soul. Get up and plan your vacation and make it big! Make it the most interesting and exciting thing you can imagine. No? not into excitement than plan the most relaxed and laid back vacation you can think of. The one thing to remember is that travel isn’t as cheap as it was in the 90’s even for ex airline employees. Travel is still affordable enough to make plans. That perfect destination is out there. Talk to your travel agent.

To Travel or Not to Travel…

I started working when I was 15. It was a cool job of working in a pizza joint. That was the beginning of the rest of my working life. Life moved on and I moved right along with it. I had a family and great jobs. I moved all over the place. My family changed and the scenery changed. I was single again and found that work was my one true constant in life.

That was 15 years ago now that I had come to that realization. I spent the next decade and a half working. Vacations were non existent. I had to work and pay bills and support my kids. I didn’t have time to take off more then a day or two to go camping.

When I met Amy the world changed and I suddenly was thinking about something other then work. We had only been dating a few weeks when she invited me to go along with her and the parental units to Disneyland. I was kind of shocked. The first thing that came through my head was “I cant leave work for that long”. I told her I would think about it. Amy asked me when the last vacation I took was? I had to think for a few minutes, calculate on my hands and then I realized I had to use my toes to keep the count right. It had been 30 years since I had been on a real vacation! I can tell you that it was unbelievable to me that I had not gone to disneyland since the summer of 1985. I went with My parents, my brothers Robby, Gordy, and Abe. I can remember most of the things about that trip like it was yesterday. Robby breaking his toe racing to the shuttle for Disneyland. Riding Space Mountain and Thunder Mountain as many times as we could.

That was it I was going to Disneyland after 30 years. It seemed fitting that the last vacation I was on was to Disneyland. We planned and I got the time off from work. I saved money and we worked hard on preparing everything we could. We were going to rent an RV and travel the open road to Mickeys House!

When the day came I woke up super excited. I felt like I was 14 again. Ready to spend the next week just playing with almost no responsibilities like I was that mullet topped, knee high sock, LA Gear Hitop wearing kid. It was a week of freedom. The trip was what I needed.

What I needed you ask? Yes! The simple act of leaving behind the daily responsibilities of being an adult allowed me to enjoy the moment. It allowed me to not sweat the small stuff. I was able to sit back and not feel the pressure of work performance, deadlines, Bills, Drama, and all the other things that come with everyday life that make us turn into Zombies.

When we returned home it was different for me. I no longer needed to work to live. I had changed my mindset. Now I worked to support my life. I made a promise to Amy that we would take a vacation every year if not more then one. So far we are ahead of the game. In two years we have gone on four distinct vacations and several Three Day Weekend trips. Over the next year we are getting married and plan to take three more vacations. Amy has always wanted to get married on a cruise. Yep…were getting married on a cruise ship by a captain.

To Travel or not to Travel? To travel is to live. Don’t let life pass you by thinking that you will go on vacation next year. Make it a reality. Take time for yourself.

My Favorite quote is by an anonymous person.

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

Live life like its an adventure.
