WALT DISNEY WORLD

Are theme parks a good idea for adults? Of course they are. So with that in mind what is the ultimate theme park? of course the title says it all. Walt Disney World is the ultimate is theme park destinations. With 4 Theme parks, 2 Water Parks and a shopping district you can spend an entire vacation without leaving Disney 25,000 acre utopia. The design of WDW has been thoroughly researched and built to make the vacationers want to explore and experience as much as possible from extreme rides to kiddie rides, from classic shows to outrageously funny monster comedy shows, from foodie heaven restaurants to dole whips. WDW was designed to make you feel like you are in the most wonderful place on earth. I for one feel that Disney does a very good job at this. Yes I know there are a million articles about WDW out there and what makes mine any better? nothing I just thought you might like to hear my thoughts on it since I am recently returned from the land of Disney. I will break down each park and let you know what I felt (including water parks). I will give you my impression of the food as well as the hotels. What about the transportation on the park and off? I got you covered there too. so lets begin this little article with arriving in Orlando.

Airport arrival: 6:30pm

We arrived on an American Airlines flight and walked off feeling pretty good. Excited to see what WDW had to offer with all the hype I hear from clients and work. So we have to get to the Magical Express. It could not have been easier as there were plenty of signs to show us the way to the pickup point. We stopped to get the one bag we checked because my wife wasnt so sure about the process and wanted to bypass any worries of our bag not getting to our room. After getting our bag we make our way to the Kiosk. This is the moment I have been waiting for, The chance to use my Magic Band! I place my hand on the Mickey Mouse orb of admittance. It turns green and the woman behind the kiosk directs us to line number 7. It was a short wait as the bus was unloading when we walked up. Our bags stowed below and we enter the clean bus we find a couple seats and relax. the bus driver closes the door a few minutes later and begins to give a partially scripted hello. His banter was funny and enjoyable with information about our travel and time to our resort. 45 minutes to an hour is the time to get to our resort. The TV Screens played classic cartoons mixed with the new cartoons. Occasionally park information videos would play. It was good information but after a days worth of traveling we didn’t really pay attention. After an hour we arrived at our destination.

Hotel Accomodations: Port Orleans Riverside

The Sharpness of the White paint on the Hotels in the Port Orleans Riverside resort was shocking in contrast to the greens and reds from the trees and flowers around it. The resort looked as if it was gently placed among the flora and fauna on purpose. Amazingly just a week before a hurricane had come through this area head on.

View from the Sassagoula River of Disney's Port Orleans Resort – Riverside in the evening

We disembarked from the bus and gathered our bags, a short walk to the lobby to check in and get directions to our room. The Hotel Staff were amazingly prepared and quick to help out. The walk to our room was a bit of a stretch but not bad after being on a plane for most of the day. The temperature was warm but the humidity was close to unbearable. Having lived in Florida I was expecting the humidity but my lovely wife was a little less thrilled with it. Grounds keepers were busy working on the resort to beautify it after the hurricane and making sure it was perfect for the guests.

We finally get to our building and find our room on the ground floor. With a quick snap of the wrist to the Mickey Mouse engraved door lock with my Magic Band it turns green and the door unlocks.Image result for disney magic band door locks

Instantly I am pushed through the door and my wife is inside enjoying the air conditioned room. The setting was on coldest and that made it perfect for her. The smart thinking of the maid service I am sure knowing people are melting outside. The carpet is a beautiful blue with accents and a magic carpet in the middle of the aisle. The beds are large and fluffy. The headboards a stunning view of the bayou and the nights sky. All of the little touches of disnerdom around the room are so subtle yet relevant to the theme. The Princess and the frog was perfect for this resorts theme and this room being filled with that was all the more fun. The bathroom was quite large and had more then enough towels and toiletries. The coolest part of the room besides the AC was the magical headboards on the beds! Obviously they had Disney magic added!

Having just arrived and in need of a decent meal we head over to the restaurant in our resort. It was called BoatWrights Dining Hall. The decor was splendid and filled with many objects from antique wood planes (shavers) to early saws and wood cutting implements. The staff was quick to seat us and get us our drinks. The menu was filled with many items that looked wonderful. I ordered the Fried Green tomatoes and the Jackson Square Etouffee , while my better half had the Corn Risotto with Chicken. We both loved our meals. incredible flavor and great presentation!

After our late dinner we were exhausted and ready for the next days adventure so it was time for bed.

The Countdown is Nearly Complete!

Can it really be? is it true? After all the planning and all the anticipation its almost here. Months, weeks and days of hearing my Fiancee countdown to the wedding cruise. Literally just a day away we will be boarding the Ruby Princess cruise ship for a wonderful 7 day Alaska Cruise. It will be my first Alaska Cruise. We plan to make this an epic and unforgettable trip. Except now we have to check our lists (Ok check my future Wife’s list).

No matter how much you plan ahead there are always the last minute things to do before you can leave. I have to get the Post office to hold our mail. We have to get the house prepared for a week without anyone going to be there. Amy has to get her girly wedding stuff together. I have to get my guy stuff organized and packed. Granted most of the time men have it easier packing then the opposite sex.

So to all those who have been following me I hope to have a few blog posts and maybe some video of the adventure to come. I promise to have plenty of pictures. You never can have to many of those.

The countdown is almost done and I am anxiously waiting to begin this next part of the Adventure of my life with the best partner is adventure.

See you when we get back!

Mini Adventure: Running the Rapids

The sun is high and the temperature is to hot for me to be comfortable. The water is deep green and cold. I have a life jacket next to me on the rafts pontoon and my Fiancee has hers also. We shove off from the shore and I take my time to adjust to the seat for comfort. I grab the oars and slowly guide us to the middle of the river. I have spent untold miles and hours on rivers doing just this activity. I love the feeling of gliding along the waters upper most layers and enjoying the sounds and sights of the river. The wildlife never ceases to amaze me. An Osprey nest in a man made extension above a power pole. The Osprey sees us as we quietly slide by without disturbing their life. Fast moving water moves us down the river faster then normal summer water speeds.

mc-pa-osprey-protected-20170211

This is our first run of the season. Last year we did not get a chance to put in the raft once and by golly this year we intend to go as often as we can. This trip is just to get it all started. The motion of the water and the occasional splash from a good set of waves reminds me even more why I love the river. Amy is just like me. She grew up running the river and learning to read the water. I am unfamiliar with this river having only been on the Rogue a couple of times before and never on this section of the river. Amy says its pretty uneventful so I am not really being as diligent about reading the water and looking for danger. Having been certified in Swift Water Rescue I will always carry a sense of caution no matter what the situation.

We see many houses along the river and comment on most.

“I like the porch but not the style of the house”

“WOW look at that one! Wish we could afford that!”

“Check out the size of that place!”

and so many other comments.

The river splits around an island….River right has visible white water and looks a little swifter then everything we have been though so far. River left looks smooth and relatively relaxed. I back row to the right side for the white water. Amy asks me why and I say the other people in front of us went that way. She says we want to go river left. I smile and move the raft back to the left side and glide down the path.

Jim Belushi is outside on his property smoking a big cigar and chatting away with a friend as we float by. He waves and has a quick conversation with Amy. He didn’t need to even acknowledge us yet he is just a nice guy who was being as normal as the rest of the people we see along the river.

Amy was right….River left was the way to go today. Next time we try river right! Shortly after that we reach our pull out and get out of the river. The trip took just over 2.5 hours and we feel like it was well worth the effort. Now that the raft is set up and ready to go so are we.

A Vacation is anything that removes you from the norm and either puts you in a different place either physical, mentally or both. These times are important for our life to be happy and fulfilled. take the time even if its just a couple of hours.

Ye Be Lookin’ Fer Adventure!

Vacations are different for everyone. The dream of a beach with a lounge chair and umbrella. A Butler bringing a cold margarita to drink with the ocean gently caressing the sandy beach at your feet. Or is it the hustle and bustle of New York City and its cursing cabbies, the bright lights of Broadway with the crowds of people leaving the next big show! Or could it be going to the local campground with the tent and cooking stove, the smell of the pine trees and the sound of the wind through the forest as you work on your survival skills.

With all the different types of people and personalities that this great world has its a comforting feeling to know that there is just as many things to do. You work all year long just to get to your vacation so what do you choose to do. What about something completely new and exciting. Try something you have never done before but always had an interest in. Its time to plan an Adventure Vacation!

Image result for ADVENTURE

Its incredible the amount of tour companies that specialize in just this sort of thing. From hiking to Machu Picchu in Peru to Sailing the open blue azure waters of the Mediterranean. You can find adventure in any part of the world. It really comes down to what you are up for. Recently one of my clients went to Europe to ride his bike along some of the best biking trails in the world. It was a beginning to his bucket list. Upon his return he told me how beautiful it was and that the trails were well maintained. He plans to go to New Zealand next to ride from the top to the bottom.

St James Cycle Trail

Take the time to plan your adventure. The possibilities are almost endless. Spend some time on the internet and look to see what is interesting to you. I have seen Hiking trips through the Shire, Rafting trips down the Grand Canyon, or Follow your favorite race team in F1 for a few races. Whatever you do just dont limit your imagination. Figure out your budget and start saving. Remember that when you go on vacation you get what you pay for. If you want a first class adventure then you need to make it so by planning it as a first class adventure. When you start to cut corners it will begin to lose its appeal because the things you really want to do are no longer on your list because of either your budget, time, or availability.

Rafts and dory in the Grand Canyon

Of course if you just want to be a pirate for a day and live the life its also available. I happen to know a great place to do just that. Whatever your taste for adventure is get up and get moving. Make it happen because life is to short to not do the things you have always wanted to do.

Live the Adventure!

Cruise Season is Here!

Actually Cruise season is year round. That’s the great thing about cruising. The Cruise Industry strategically places their ships where the most popular destinations are for whatever time of year it is. You can go on holiday to bask in the sun on a beach while your partner goes snorkeling in a coral reef and then wake up the next day in a shoppers paradise. Meanwhile back home the snow is getting deeper and the Christmas rush is beginning. Yet you have no worries because you are off the coast of New Zealand. Your only worry is what to do next? Shopping at the Maori trading post or just stay aboard and enjoy a luxurious spa treatment.

That sounds great right? Well maybe you are not a big fan of ocean travel. I will be the first to tell you that it is not a big deal at all. If you get seasick I would recommend getting medication for it. but other than that it’s so relaxing. The service is second to none and the amenities are aplenty. If that the big Blue still worries you then maybe a river cruise is more your style. You get all the benefits of the ocean cruise without the Big Blue water. You can cruise the mighty Mississippi on a fancy paddlewheel riverboat. You can explore the rivers of Europe on an elegant river Longboat. Whatever your adventurous self feels there is something for you.

Would you like a breakdown? Here are the basics and if you have any questions just leave a comment.

Destinations

“Why would I want to sail around the oceans and look at water?”

When is comes to diversity is the locations for traveling you cannot get any more diverse than cruising either by sea or by river. You are always on the move. Typically at night the ship transports you from one port to the next while you sleep. This allows you to enjoy the day in a different place. You can find cruises with ports of call in places such as Skagway Alaska for rustic and adventurous life to the Wonders of Budapest Hungary for the magnificent architecture and culture. You can sail Halong Bay while sipping wine or move through the locks of Panama Canal!

If its near the water a cruise line probably operates in the vicinity. The only real limitation you have is yourself. The world economy has always depended on shipping on the water, be it cargo ships on the Mediterranean or barges moving up the Mississippi. You can enjoy the multiple destinations on cruises or simply stay on board and enjoy what the ship has to offer.

On Board the Ship

You say “Is there really that much to do on a ship?”

I say “You will have a hard time doing it all in one cruise!”

The Cruise industry realizes that there are many different types of people who enjoy cruising. So in order to make the ship as pleasing to their customers as possible they have spent a lot of time designing the ships to meet all those needs anyone would possibly want. There is never a lack of something to do on a cruise ship.

Most ships have a casino. Some of the smaller ships that specialize in certain trips don’t but for the most part they all do. You can play the standard card games and roulette. Slot Machines are all over the casino area for those who prefer to pull the lever of luck. You might also find a gaming machine that you have never seen in a casino before. One way or another you will surely find a game for you to play.

6-casino-captainsandcruises

If gambling isn’t your thing then maybe you would like to just relax and have a cup of premium espresso from the coffee shop in the promenade while you send an email to your co-workers telling them how great a time you are having. The Promenade on the ship is a great area to relax and just chat. comfortable chairs and a food court atmosphere with a bit more Parisian Street feel then the local mall. Have a pastry or maybe some sushi and wine. What about a shopping trip with some beautiful jewelry or a new deck of cards.

promenade

OK so those are all well and good things to do but what about activities? Well depending on the cruise line and the ship you can find activities for everyone from water slides to zip-lining. You can catch a First class stage show in the main theatre or an excellent magician at the Pub. The adults can hit a nightclub complete with lighted dance floor and scratching DJ. If you are worried your golf game will suffer from a couple of weeks away from the links….Worry no more! Most ships have a golf simulator so you can keep up on your green time.

What about the Kids? Well let me tell you they will not be bored either. Princess and most other cruise ships have a specific area for kids of all ages. Video game arcades and pool tables, Foosball and air hockey. Some ships have activities set up so that the kids can go and enjoy themselves while the parents can get away and play also. Of course Cruise lines like Disney have a great big chunk of this market and trust me when I tell you that everyone enjoys a Disney cruise. Disney cruises is a Blog all by itself so I wont get to specific with them yet.

Culinary Delights!

“How am I going to fuel all this crazy fun activity?”

Well I am glad you asked! From the all you can eat buffets to the specialty restaurants there is no shortage of food. You will find cart vendors with food like hot dogs and ice cream as well as soda shops with chocolate malts. You can enjoy Steak and Lobster cooked to perfection. My fiancée looks forward to every Princess cruise she goes on for the Fettuccine Alfredo. The food is always exceptional in quality and taste. If you decide to do traditional dining or anytime dining you will not leave the table hungry as you can ask for more. We prefer the traditional dining as we get to know our wait staff as the cruise proceeds. This is an advantage when it comes to personalizing your experience. Take the opportunity to indulge in some of the best food you will ever have. Oh and lastly…Room Service is free and typically available 24 hours!

Accommodations

“Are the rooms tiny?”

Didn’t you read up above? You wont be in your room to worry about the size. Still if you are concerned about the size of the room then don’t. The rooms vary in size depending on what you book. Inside cabins are small and have no windows. yet when I say small I am comparing them to a hotel room. A small cabin runs from 130-160 square feet. This is about the size of a bedroom in your house. The layout is such that you have plenty of room to move about and relax. The bathrooms are spacious and clean.

If you want an upgrade you have several options. View-port Cabin, Balcony Cabin, Mini Suite, Suite and some ships have Grand suites or Owners Suites. The balconies are big enough to relax on and have a meal. The Mini suites are bigger then the balcony rooms. A couch is added that turns into a bed. The Suites are really nice with enough room for a few people to come to your room for an after dinner drink from the mini bar that is provided in all rooms. Now I have only viewed pictures of the Grand Suites and Owners Suites but they look like a condo in Hawaii. They are huge and quite honestly not my taste but if you want to have a room that big its available.

Pricing

“Yeah but those cruises are so expensive!”

You would be surprised how affordable cruising is! Depending on the destination, Length of trip, Cruise line, Cabin preference and how far in advance you book cruising can be very economical and easy on the pocketbook. Yet at the same time if you really want to splurge and have a first class experience you can certainly take the duct tape off the wallet and let a few extra bills fall out, You wont be let down.

When you purchase a cruise fare typically all food except specialty restaurants are included in the price. Water, Coffee, and tea are provided but sodas, Specialty coffee, juice and alcoholic beverages are extra. All entertainment except for the casino is included.

I know it all sounds like there are far to many options but that’s the reason it’s so much more affordable now. To fill the ships the cruise industry has to lower the prices to get the people on board.

Planning

“Well this sounds great! Where should I go?”

The best way to plan your cruise is to do just that…Plan. Look online at travel blogs and see what interests you. watch travel shows like Anthony Bourdain or National Geographic to give you ideas. The best way is to just pick someplace you have always wanted to go. Start there and expand to see what else is interesting for you.

Once you have that figured out then call your Travel Agent and let them figure out the technical stuff. A few things to have in mind would help them out. Have a realistic budget in mind. Calling your agent and asking for a 28 day cruise to Australia with a budget of $1500.00 a person is just not realistic in most cases. Think about airfare to the port city. Think about excursions off the ship you may want to do. $1500.00 is a realistic budget if you want to do a 4 or 5 day cruise from a port city near you.

Travel agents ask for a budget so they know what to work with. I as an agent want to give you the most bang for your buck. I am not trying to spend every last dollar of your budget. I want you to have the time of your life and go on more trips. The best part of being a Travel Agent is having my clients tell me what a wonderful time they had and that they discovered something new or that they did something on their bucket list. That’s why I love my job.

Stop wasting life and enjoy it! Live today like an adventure!

LIVE THE ADVENTURE!

What kind of Vacation is for me?

Taking a vacation is something that has changed in the last 20 years or so. When I was a kid my parents did 2 types of vacations. The amusement park vacation and the camping vacation. Both of these types of vacations were more than enough to keep a family recharged and happy.

The Amusement Park Vacation consisted of just that an amusement park such as Disneyland, Six Flags, Marine World or some other place that was at least a day or 2 drive away. We didn’t fly so much when I was a kid because it wasn’t affordable in my dads eyes. We went to Disneyland twice when I was a kid. I was to young to really remember the first time but the second time I was 13 and had my best friend Abe with me. My parents loaded up the light blue 1973 Ford Pinto Wagon with us and off we went. It was a great trip and was a highlight of my young life.

Pinto

The Camping Vacation was something we did at least once a year and usually more. It was something we could do as a family that was affordable. basically the cost of fuel, beer, soda, as well as odds and ends for the camp site. My mom had a system for camping that worked well. You get to the site and set up camp then relax for the next few days. Simple and easy.

1976-gmc-jimmy-casa-grande

Move forward to the vacations of today. The types of vacations that are available today are so numerous that new categories have been added.

  1. Sightseeing
  2. Adventure
  3. Nature
  4. Impact/volunteer
  5. Rest and Relaxation
  6. Educational
  7. Amusement
  8. Staycation

Now a quick explanation of each in case you can’t figure it out.

1.Sightseeing

A popular vacation for people looking for culture. These vacations tend to be picking a single destination and just looking at whats there. Exploring museums or going to a market or maybe watching a sporting event then walking around the city looking at what makes it different from other big cities. Seattle is a good example of a sightseeing adventure. The range of things that you can do on a very modest budget makes it a great destination for sightseeing.

seattle

2.Adventure

The Adventure vacation has grown increasingly popular. From Adventure racing to Downhill mountain biking treks. The amount of Zipline companies in tourist destinations has increased ten fold. It seems like the adventurous youth are growing up and wanting to push the limits while on vacation. Trips to Everest Base camp have increased due to the increased accessibility to it over the years.

3.Nature

Time to grab the camera and the backpack! the Nature vacation is an outdoor persons dream. To surround ones self with the great outdoors can be the only way to recharge for some people. The sound of the wind in the trees or the strange noise in the middle of the night that brings back childhood night mares that keep you awake……ummm anyway. The beauty of the outdoors is a magnet for many travelers. From a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail to Off-road adventures in the great Moab of Utah

4.Impact/Volunteer

This is a rather interesting type of vacation. You go on a vacation to help out a community. Volunteering your time and energy to bring improvements to communities that are less fortunate. Many companies provide tours that go to Cuba, the Dominican Republic and many third world countries that could use help. The work is anything from helping to drill a well to mixing concrete and pouring floors in homes. I have yet to meet anyone who has gone on one of these vacations that hasn’t loved the experience. Helping out your fellow human being is a great soul lifter.

5.Rest and Relaxation

Simple topic… This is where the spa as well as the all-inclusive resorts come in to play. Nothing but beaches to lay on, or decks to watch the stars out in the middle of the ocean on a cruise ship. The best part is there is no real planning once you arrive to these destinations. coordinators take charge or you can be left alone to do as you will. The important part is no pressure and all luxury or as much as you can afford. Cruises are popular as well as Caribbean and Mexican all inclusive resorts.

6.Educational

Educational vacations are becoming very popular. Astronomy tours are one of the more popular venues. Museum and art tours are the largest tours available in Paris for obvious reasons. Tours can just be as simple as receiving a tour handbook with a ride to the destination. They can also be as complex as all day seminars on very complex subjects from Physics and Astronomy to Bigfoot symposium. The goal is to use your vacation to increase your knowledge. group of athletes running along the embankment

7.Amusement

Obviously this is the fun one for the kids and the kid at heart. Disneyland or Disney World are the go to amusement vacations for many but with a little research you would be surprised at the amount of other places you can go to that have some really great amusement parks just waiting to be discovered. Wuhu China has Fantawild Adventure park with a few roller coasters and other attractions. South Korea even has its own Disneyland Knock-off in Lotte World. You can even find a little known amusement park off of I-5 in Oregon that has a very long history called the Enchanted Forest. A very cute and fun little park.

8.Staycation

The wonderful Staycation. Turn off the cell phone. Close the blinds and stay home. Watch TV, cook great meals and read a book on your most comfortable couch. The point is to stay in and relax in the comfort of your own home. Of course you can take tours of discovery for your own town or city. You can take the opportunity to discover new and improved attractions and events in your local area. This is a very good way to bring back your own sense of community. Give it a try and if you prefer to run away then do so.

Vacations are completely personal and with all the options available in this day and age you can personalize a vacation to include any number of combinations from the list above or just do the one type. It’s completely up to your sense of adventure and of course there are many other types of vacation styles out there. The most important part is to get out there and do something. Don’t let the world pass you by because you are unsure or misinformed. The information is out there. Call a travel agent and ask questions.

The world is here for you to explore! Even the longest journey begins with one step. Take the step and begin the adventure of a lifetime on your terms.

Food!

I am by no means a little guy. I like to enjoy the food I eat and it shows. I am sure that you have heard how bland or how unusual the food is in England, Ireland and Scotland. Well that just simply is not true about it being bland. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. Yes some of the food is unusual and that’s what makes it so great and exciting to eat.

The most interesting aspect of the food is the variety in the ingredients and recipes that are used. Sure there are several things that we as Americans eat that are melting pot recipes from Scotland, England, and Ireland. Most people don’t even realize it. Yet there are a few that have not really become well-known in the states.

Cullen Skink

cullen-skink

This wonderful soup is rich and creamy with a very satisfying taste. It main ingredient is Smoked Haddock and Potatoes. There are several recipes that vary in the execution of the dish. Some people blend it all together so that all the flavors mix with a couple of pieces of Smoked Haddock in the middle. Others leave the potatoes chopped with the fish flaked into the chowder like broth. Either way its incredible. If you are not a fan of fish then this dish may not be for you. If you love fish then be sure to not miss this Culinary Masterpiece.

Haggis

haggis

Haggis is one of those meals that if you are not raised eating it you are going to think “No way am I eating that!” I cannot tell you what a fantastic meal you would miss out on. The texture and flavor are incredible the moment it hits your mouth. The ingredients may not be the usual staples of american foods but then again if it wasn’t lung, kidney, and heart then it wouldn’t be Haggis. The National Dish of Scotland, Haggis has just as many recipes as kitchens. Each family has a favorite method for making Haggis. Some like the consistency wet and others dry. The specific ratios of meats to oats and herbs is just as important. Haggis is versatile and lends its flavor well to other dishes. While I was in Crieff I enjoyed a delicious treat at the visitors center called a Drover Burger.

Listen to this….

  • 1/4lb Beef Burger
  • sunny side up egg
  • Bacon (Scottish bacon is actually Back Bacon that is thicker and bigger)
  • Cheese
  • Haggis
  • Whisky Sauce

Oh my goodness I cannot tell you how incredible this burger was. I dream of this creation often. It just goes to show you that Haggis is as versatile as water!

Fish and Chips

You can get fish and chips anywhere in the world. What you can’t get is REAL Scottish/British Fish and Chips from a Chip shop. It’s hard to explain but let me try. You know how you can make popcorn at home and it’s just ok, but if you go to the movie theatre and buy the $6.75 bag of popcorn with butter it tastes incredible? Same principle here.

94abf35c-07df-4e92-8eb8-073f023a27a3

The way it is cooked and the texture is just amazing. My fiancée who does not like fish even said she loved it. Now that is saying something. The coating is crisp and flaky with no greasy feel at all. The fish is tender and moist. The chips (Fries) are crispy on the outside but cooked through and tasty with just a hint of salt. Of course what Fish and Chips meal wouldn’t be complete without a bottle of Irn Bru. The Scottish Drink of choice second only to Scotch Whisky.

Now I could go on for pages and pages about the wonderful and creative foods found in Scotland, Ireland, and England but I will stop here for now. Make plans to go try some of these foods at a local restaurant that has international foods on the menu. or better yet take a trip to the region and try it first hand from the experts themselves.

I am off to have an early lunch now that I am hungry.

Life is an Adventure but don’t forget to eat along the way!

Top 10 reasons choose Scotland for holiday or vacation

This is a great Article by James Murphy that I read on the My Great Britain Blog Website. Give it a read and see what you might be missing out on!

http://www.myguidebritain.com/blog/top-10-reasons-to-vacation-in-scotland/

Top 10 reasons choose Scotland for holiday or vacation

Scotland is a land of contrasts combining the old and the new, the rural with the urban. A land of unspoilt and unrivaled landscapes, of rugged mountains and lochs, yet possessing vibrant and modern cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow, it manages to successfully combine these two contrasting sides. It holds a rural backdrop of awe inspiring scenery, villages and towns of unique local history and culture all the while possessing a modern and young urban landscape with cities of the calibre of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen that can rival the best in Europe. Scotland is  a land for many tastes, both young and old. From the intrepid trekker, the nature enthusiast, the history buff to the young trendsetter and music fan, Scotland holds a bit of everything.

With that in mind here are some of the Top 10 reasons to holiday or vacation in Scotland:

1.     The festivals – Edinburgh festival
For three weeks each August, Edinburgh is taken over by a selection of festivals running concurrently celebrating and promoting all sectors of the Arts. During this month there are a host of activities and events designed in part to both endorse and engage the population in the Arts, from music to theatre (classical to contemporary), from dance to comedy, to pantomime and children’s shows, art displays and the visual arts, free street theatre and caberet, musicals and opera there is something for everyone of all ages and budgets.
During the day the streets are filled with free street entertainment, art exhibitions and events for all the family, while at night Edinburgh comes alive with theatre, opera, shows, acts and parties held across various venues while the pubs are often filled with live music and some comedy acts.

2.    The cities – Nightlife
As well as magnificent and unspoiled countryside, Scotland has a trio of large cities in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow that in terms of shopping and, most importantly, nightlife can rival the cities of it’s counterpart over the border England. Of the three, Glasgow is the largest,  most bustling and vibrant of all with a busy nightlife, consisting of earthy, traditional pubs, trendy cafe bars and a range of all night discos and super-clubs.
As evidenced by the strength of the Edinburgh festival, Edinburgh, the capital, is a city renowned for the Arts and classical entertainment whilst hosting a range of cool designer bars and restaurants. Aberdeen, the third largest city, is a university city with a wealth of art galleries, museums and a thriving youth scene, and is well known as being the centre of live music in Scotland with live music of all types being catered for in many music bars and venues.
Also of special note in these cities is the Scottish celebration of Hogmanay (or New Year’s Eve) a party that combines tradition with modern hedonism. Starting early on New Years Eve people take to the streets to celebrate with live bands, dancing, and street theatre. As the countdown to the New Year begins, the street celebrations descend into a flurry of wild parties and revelry that last long after the ringing in of the New Year, the singing of Auld Langs Syne and the fireworks. Overall it is a party not to be missed.

3.    Scenery  and Wildlife– the lochs and the highlands
While the cities of Scotland are a-buzz with activity, by contrast the countryside and rural communities have for the most part remained unspoiled by time and industrialisation, still retaining the wild mysticism of old. With the most spectacular scenery in the UK and a magical variety of flora and fauna, the rugged, uncompromising Scottish landscape is a nature lovers’ haven. As well as a stunning landscape Scotland possess a wealth of undisturbed wildlife such as eagles and osprey, mountain goats, hares and deer. Along the coast and on the Scottish islands, particularly Mull and Skye, there are many opportunities to observe various species of birds and puffins, seals, whales and dolphins whether on foot or on whale watching excursions along the coast. With this range of scenery and wildlife it is no wonder that Scotland is one of the most photographed countries in Europe, a point proven with the 2009 landscape of the year photograph being awarded to a picture taken of the Old man of Storr on the Isle of Skye.

4.    Loch Ness – mystery of the monster
Mention Loch Ness and the first thing that comes to mind is “Nessie” the legendary Loch Ness Monster that is said to lurk in the dark depths of this vast loch. Since the controversial “surgeons photograph” appeared showing a plesiosaur–type creature (ancient underwater dinosaur)  emerging out of the loch in the 30’s the legend of Nessie has continued to baffle and intrigue visitors to the loch to this day inspiring a string of stories and film. If you want to check out the story of Nessie and the Loch for yourselves, why not visit The Original Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre. There you will find a wealth of documented sightings and facts, reports from respected investigative search expeditions such as Operation Deep-scan and audio-visual displays that show the history and the main sightings of the monster, hints that there may be more to this legend than what you may have thought.
Alternatively for those with no interest in the legend one can also avail of a Jacobite cruise into the heart of the loch and witness the stunning panoramic views it offers of the surrounds including the majestic Urquhart Castle and the surrounding mountains. Whether a believer or a sceptic one cannot deny nonetheless that there is a haunting beauty to be found in this vast mysterious loch.

5.    Castles – Edinburgh, Stirling, Eilean Donean

6.    Chapels and Cathedrals
With its bloodied and romantic history it is no wonder that the Scottish landscape is dotted throughout with castles of varying quality steeped in legend. From the iconic castle of Eilean Donan Castle on the Isle of Skye, famous for its appearance in many films and photos worldwide, the elegance of the now manor residence Culzean Castle to the dominating spectacle of Stirling castle with views to the highlands, lowlands and the capital, castles dominate Scottish landscape and history. Of all the castles in Scotland, however, the most famous and best loved is, of course, Edinburgh Castle perched on an ancient volcanic rock and overlooking the capital. Inside, it is a living reminder of Scottish history where Scottish kings and Queens reigned and where the Scottish crown jewels reside to this day. It is a must see for visitors to Edinburgh offering both a wealth of history and legend and holds stunning views over the entire domain of Edinburgh from its man-made urban skyline to the north to it’s geological landscape to the south.

While maybe not as romantic as castles, Scottish cathedrals and chapels carry their own tale of history as most were the scenes of as many battles as worship. They can be found throughout the Scottish landscape and islands, for the most part in a state of ruin. Some of the most noteworthy are Melrose Abbey, a Cistercian Abbey said to be the place where Robert the Bruces heart is buried, and Dryburgh Abbey, the resting place of Sir Walter Scott, Scotland’s most famous writer. Perhaps one of the most intriguing abbeys and one of the few fully standing intact is Rosslyn chapel brought to public attention recently with the worldwide success of the book and film the “Da Vinci Code” in which it plays a central role to the plot of the story. Whether or not the allusions to freemasonry, the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail are true or not, there is no denying that the intricate architecture and carvings sculpted inside Rosslyn Chapel are fascinating. All of the details involved in the chapel appear to be steeped in symbolism from many different sources, biblical, pagan, and Masonic, all of which appear to add to the legend of its position in the tales of the Knights Templar and freemasonry

7.    History
As evidenced by the various castles and cathedrals situated across the landscape Scotland is a land steeped in history made famous on film through the film Braveheart. All the castles and ruins are open to the public. Also of considerable note are some of Scotland’s famous battle sites such as Stirling and Bannockburn of William Wallace legend and the desolate moors of Culloden where Bonnie Prince Charlies highland armies met their end at the hands of English forces. On each of these sites one will find monuments in honour of the brave souls who died for their country and nearby visitor centres at Culloden and Bannockburn provide more detailed accounts of these events which helped to shape Scotland’s history.

For those of us whose idea of history is more ancient there are many examples of prehistoric landmarks around the country and, in particular, on the Scottish Islands. The most noted of these is Orkney Island with its World Heritage sites such as the Neolithic dwellings of Skara Brae (predating the Egyptian Pyramids) the ancient tomb of Maes Howe and the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar all built long before Stonehenge.

8.    Cultural festivals  – Highland Games, EE
Scotland has a distinctive and unique culture and nowhere is this better highlighted than in traditional festivals such as the Highland Games. Although considered on first glance as a festival for tourists, the highland games are actually a range of festivals held in Scotland and Scottish communities worldwide that celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture & heritage, especially that of the highlands.
Certain aspects of the games have in turn come to epitomize the worldwide view of Scottish culture, such as the bagpipes, the kilt, and the Scottish dancing. In the these games, which take place in Scotland throughout the summer, one will find a variety of events ranging from the actual games themselves (involving the cable toss and Scottish hammer throw to name just two) to Scottish dance competitions highlighting the Scottish country dances and highland dances to the country fairs and cattle shows. At the end of these local festivals the rendition of traditionally favorite songs are played by the pipe bands creating a sound that has come to symbolize the games and Scotland.
Another event where one can hear the music of the bagpipes and especially the haunting lament of the lone piper is at the Edinburgh military tattoo held in Edinburgh castle grounds in August during the height of the Edinburgh Arts Festival, where the history of Scotland is played out in a spectacular and colorful array of music and dance.

9.    Food and Drink– haggis and beyond, the whisky distilleries
For a country with a rich rural and coastal landscape and temperate climate it is not surprising that Scotland has a reputation as a food producer of quality foods such as beef, lamb, game, dairy produce, fruit and vegetables all of which can be found in various recipes in the finest eateries in Scotland and worldwide. And that is forgetting its traditional foods such as Haggis, neeps & tatties and Abroath Smokies (famous local haddock specially smoked over woodchips for a distinctive flavour). Haggis from it’s description (a sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, minced and mixed with oatmeal, onion and salt and served encased in a sheep’s stomach lining) sounds more stomach curdling than mouthwatering but description aside it’s actually a delicious treat while tatties and neeps which are often served with Haggis may sound likewise unappetizing but they are actually Scottish names for mashed potatoes (tatties) and mashed turnip (neeps).

But Scotland is more famous as a producer of fine Whisky with a plethora of distilleries around the country. These distilleries are now well known as tourist attractions which give the visitor a guided tour and a complimentary taste of the produce, while shops on the distillery grounds provide a nice sample to take home.

10    Sport – Home of Golf
Scotland is known as the ancestral home of golf with the first recorded game of golf being originally played at St Andrews (allegedly by shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes in their spare time) and developed from there into the game it is today. Today, St Andrews holds the seat of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the game’s governing body and its old golf course is one of Scotland’s most famous links courses, the others being Royal Troon, the Old Course, Muirfield, Carnoustie and Turnberry all of which often hold the British Open Championship. As well as the above, Scotland has a variety of golf courses across the countryside making golf a sport accessible to everyone and if you’re a golf buff the British Golf Museum at St Andrews holds information on the roots and history of the game.
Other than golf, Soccer and Rugby are the other main components in the Scottish sporting calendar. In soccer old-firm rival Glaswegian clubs, Celtic and Rangers and to a lesser extent Aberdeen, dominate the sport having reached international acclaim and watching the matches can be a lively event in itself. The main soccer stadiums are mainly situated in the Glasgow homes of Celtic (matches held at Celtic Fc) and Rangers (matches held at Ibrox). Also in Glasgow, Hampdon Park is the venue for the Scottish national team. As for Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh is where one can find most of the action with the main rugby events to look out for being the Six Nations Championship and European (Heineken) Cup.

All of the above reasons are just the basics, for more in-depth analysis of Scotland one has to go there and see it for themselves.

That First Step

Whats the hold up? Finances? Time? people? Whatever your reason let me tell you its not a valid reason…..

We spend the time in our lives working hard to make our lives better. Work long hours to show our dedication to the boss for that raise so you can afford new things. You work on Saturday to get the project done ahead of schedule. Leave early in the morning to get into the plant early for a jump on the days duties. so what have you done?

The extra hours to impress your boss has led to those hours lost with your family. That Saturday Baseball game of your kids is missed. Breakfast with the daughter who admires you was missed. Thats what happened. Now I get that we all have to make sacrifices to better our living situations but when you spend more and more time trying to better your situation without any rewards you can become disheartened and flippant. Its hard to realize how far down that rabbit hole you have fallen.

The problem with the Rat Race is you can get hit by the Rat Trap! What you forget in all that hustle and bustle is you and your family deserve to have a life. Spend time together and have fun. You are ALLOWED to enjoy your family and life. Its time for you to take it back! Take back that Saturday. Take back the Morning breakfast and the afternoon game of catch. Take back your life.
